Only three weeks after soldier and adventurer Jim Bowie wrote these words, Mexican president and general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his six thousand troops arrived at the fort known as the Alamo to assert their control over the Americans who had settled in Texas, which was a part of Mexico.
