Native American Histories: The Apaches

The nomadic groups of Apache have lived in North America for hundreds of years. Traditional Apache homelands stretch across the modern American Southwest. As skilled hunters, the independent Apache traveled freely, never settling in permanent locations. As Spanish explorers and white settlers began to settle in their territory, Apaches resisted and, led by Geronimo and Cochise, fought for their lands and freedom. But eventually Apaches were forced to give up much of their land. The history of the Apache people is filled with both pain and pride. However, their strong beliefs and traditions still flourish today.
