The dramatic full-color photographs of firefighters at work will immediately capture readers' attention, but this is really a book about the machines that fight fires-pumper trucks, ladder trucks, quint trucks, even fireboats. Most of the time, Simon clarifies quantitative concepts; for example, the eight spotlights on a searchlight truck could illuminate a sports stadium at night, but there is no equivalent for the reference to 100 feet in the air. Long after the machine cards in the book (only in the paperback edition) are gone, readers will be caught up in the visual drama and the interesting facts.
