Chester has always wanted to become a service dog. When he fails his certification test, though, it seems like that dream might never come true—until a family adopts him to be a companion for their ten-year-old son, Gus, who has autism.
Chester hopes to follow in his mother's paw prints and become a service dog. Ever since he was a puppy he's been told that there's no better feeeling than helping your person when they're in need. But when Chester fails his certification test because he's afraid of loud noises, he worries his dream will never come true.
Then a family adopts him to be a companion for their son, Gus, who has autism. It's not exactly what Chester was trained for, but he'll do whatever he can to prove he's the right dog for the job.
Gus is a ten-year-old boy who acts a lot different from anyone Chester has ever known. He won't look at Chester, he doesn't want to pet him, and sometimes he doesn't even want Chester in the same room. Chester's not sure how he's supposed to help Gus, but he's determined to figure it out. Because after all, Gus is now his person.
