Room to Read's Afghan Children’s Book Collection

First Book and Room to Read are partnering to make Room to Read's Afghan Children's Book Collection available on the First Book Marketplace. The collection features 12 children's books that explore themes related to refugee resettlement. The titles have been adapted from a collection of books Room to Read originally created for Syrian refugees in Jordan. The books were selected for the collection from members of the Afghan community in the U.S. and adapted and translated into Dari and Pashto in consultation with Afghans living in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the United States.
The books, aimed at children ages 4-8, are available in both the Dari and Pashto languages, the two majority languages spoken by Afghan resettlement communities in the U.S.
Reader Guide Available: When children experience big changes, such as resettling to a new home, it is helpful for them to have opportunities to identify feelings, learn how to manage their emotions and make responsible decisions, and establish strong relationships with supportive adults and peers. Engaging in conversations about stories can help children practice these skills. Room to Read has created a reader guide to provide educators and children an opportunity to explore questions that will reinforce social-emotional learning and help children manage change in a positive, healthy way. Download the guide in English, Dari, or Pashto.
Room to Read is a global organization transforming the lives of millions of children in historically low-income communities by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Founded in 2000 on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children®.
